On top of the business cards, logo designs, and Search Engine Optimization, from time to time we like to build websites as well. 5 years ago we started integrating the WordPress platform into some of our builds, and currently (except for our database development) it accounts for 100% of all of our newly built websites. Worldwide, roughly 22% of all newly registered domains are built on WordPress. Couple that with the already 75 million sites that are currently run on, or have their blogs powered by WordPress and you begin to see that a large part of the internet is built with this software. But what is it, why does it matter to you, and why do we love it so much.
What is it?
WordPress is just one of many CMS technologies currently being used to build websites. A CMS is a content management system. This differs from a traditional website that would have generally been coded in HTML. HTML or traditional websites were fairly un-updateable except for programmers, or people proficient at banging their heads against the wall sifting through a thousand lines to find that one missing > symbol… Basically a CMS is a platform programmers use to build a website that is client editable.
According to google: WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it’s probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS) in existence today.
Why Does it Matter to You?
Gone are the days where you would have to contact your website design company because someone got a new email address or phone number and you needed it updated. Started offering a new service and want to add a line or two about it on your site? Boom within minutes you can craft a page, add the text, pictures, put it in fancy columns and publish it. The power of WordPress for a client is that it gives them control and the ability to make edits to their website.
Why We Like it?
There are plenty of other CMS technologies out there. What sets WordPress apart? We believe it allows us the ability to offer the most cost efficient, custom, feature packed website to our clients. WordPress software is updated constantly, so that it is secure, and offers new features all the time. With our range of themes to use as a starting point, and our designer overseeing the build, we can rapidly deploy a custom website.
Couple that with the 50,000 plugins currently available and our ability to build a custom one if necessary, there generally isn’t anything that can’t be completed with the software. As styles and design change, the website can grow and change in small ways to stay current. However if a full redesign is necessary, the ability to change the framework and template of the site is much easier, and content doesn’t have to be recoded, just reorganized to work with a new look. This cuts down on the time and the cost to deploy a brand new site.
With our current process we have a builder (myself), a designer (Trey), and a client liaison (Chris) all working together in WordPress to take a clients detailed goals, and transform them into a website that is easy to manage, future-proof, and looks great.
