What Makes a Workplace Fun?

Have you ever dreaded coming to work in the morning? I’m willing to bet the answer is yes. Working full time can certainly seem like a repetitive drag sometimes. You do the same routine 5 days a week for a full year, and sometimes it seems like we are just going through the motions. But working full time doesn’t have to be so bad when we have fun at work and get along with our coworkers. Our office at Business Builders is a great place of collaboration, productivity, and fun. Studies have recently shown that, on average, happy employees are 12% more productive. So, doing things at the office to have a little fun are beneficial to both the company and its employees. Below are some key components of a fun workplace.

Encourage Laughter

As I stated above, laughter is a vital part of your day. It’s important to see the positives in life and find humor in the little things. When employees are happy, they work better. They feel good about their job, which will reflect in their work. Don’t let laughter become a major distraction around the office, but a fun and light-hearted atmosphere can be a game changer.

Good Coworkers

Whether you’re an employer or an employee, working with people you like is one of the most important aspects of a good workday. Good teammates support one another and work well together. If you get people on the same page, it’s better for the company as a whole. You want to have trusted team members you can rely on in any situation.

Allow Balance of Life and Work

Life happens. When it does, an employer should understand and allow their employee whatever time they need to deal with it. Whether it’s taking a sick kid to the doctor, getting car repairs, having a dentist appointment, etc., a good employee will be trusted to get his/her work done whenever they can.

Do Fun Things Together

One thing that my boss always encourages is doing fun activities together. Every now and then we will have a team event—dinner in town, escape room, movie night, etc. These events help us get closer and get to know each other better. This builds team chemistry, which in turn increases productivity among the group.

Collaborate

As corny as it sounds, working together is key to success. An office with an open space can really foster collaboration. It makes a difference when people have easier access to each other, instead of having to walk over to another cubicle and engage in isolated conversations. Many times, I’ll gauge the room for ideas, and my coworkers do the same. We have an open communication between the entire team, which enables us to make the most of our workdays.

Quick Points

Comfort- A comfortable workspace can go a long way with employees. Comfy chairs and couches are relaxing and better for back support.

Taking Breaks- Sometimes we fire up the Xbox for a few minutes after a long meeting, or enjoy a group lunch together. The time away can give employees’ minds a break and let them come back stronger and more likely to be productive.
